Face to Face Workshops

This is a two-day workshop held in Sydney CBD.

• Suitable for beginners and those converting from NVivo 8
• Be introduced to all the new features in NVivo 9

Day One: Setting up and organizing your project; working with all types of research data

This workshop starts with no assumed knowledge of NVivo or of research processes. As we progress through the two days you will become familiar with the NVivo working space and how to work to use the tools to best suit your project. Those who have experience working with earlier versions of NVivo may begin to question the investigative processes and methods most suitable for use in their own projects. Discussions around these issues can be quite lively, and provide a useful sharing of experiences and insights about how to progress your research whether it be academic or commercial. As you will see from the sample course outline we cover all the ‘click and point’ processes to get you started and much more – all with a step by step workbook by your side for quick reference. You will use a combination of sample data and your own data to learn to manage documents, spreadsheets, database tables, audio, video, images. An optional extra is to learn to work with data from bibliographic software such as Endnote, or from statistical packages such as SPSS.

Day Two: Query design to answer analytical questions; graphical representation of query results and other data

Day 2 is about getting organised. As researchers we want to look at the relationships occurring between ideas and be able to explain why and when they do or don’t occur. We start to group and organise all our data types; we examine relationships using text analyses and querying, and discover how to present the results as reports and stunning visuals such as 3D graphs and charts. Those who bring along their project materials can leave with a well-developed project and the confidence to progress their research once back at their desk.

Data

For the training exercises we will use the sample data provided. However be sure to bring some of your own data as well as there will be time set aside to set up and develop your own project.

Computing Skill

A "reasonable" level of skill with MS Word is assumed. Participants need to be able to navigate around documents, save them as different file types, apply style headings and perform basic functions like cut, copy and paste. People who cannot operate efficiently at this level may find they have a double learning curve for the first half of Day 1. Please let me know if you have any concerns in this area.

Project Days

The point at which you may need help is at the “what now?” stage: I’ve done a lot of coding and some analysis but I’m not sure where to from here. In this case you need to be asked strategic questions that will help you to orient and reshape or refine the evolving project, in order to stay aligned with your key research questions and accommodate worthwhile new ones.

These days are designed to provide inexpensive access to research advice and mentoring and exposure to peers at different stages of their projects. The Project days are run as small group events in comfortable and relaxed surroundings. The aim of the day is to stimulate your thinking about your project and move you through to the next phase and closer to completion. These days can be run on or off site to accommodate small groups and teams.

1 on 1 Consulting

Use some one on one time to refine your project design and keep you on track. Access ideas about how to structure your data in NVivo for best results and how to generate results that answer the questions you have about your project. One on one time is invaluable when it comes to clarifying your research goals and saving you time achieving them. If there are several people in your university or organisation wanting to learn NVivo it may be advantageous to conduct a training session on-site.
